Overpainted photograph

This artwork combines photography and painting to create a layered, expressive composition. Swirling brushstrokes in purple, green and brown float over a background of a photograph of beautifully stacked sake barrels I came across while traveling in Japan. I was immediately drawn to their texture, colors, and meaning. With abstract painting, I’m trying to capture what they made me feel and add my own layer of interpretation.
The artwork is part of the series In Soft Motion in which I capture the fleetingness and beauty of transient moments. I set out in search of moments of lightness, tranquillity and a deep connection with nature. Photography and painting merge into flowing visual worlds in which memories, moods and fragments of nature invite us to pause and appreciate the fleeting. By painting over photographic fragments I focus on the special in the supposedly inconspicuous.
